The Greatest Theatre

The Ancient Greeks built an acoustically perfect theatre in Epidaurus that is still used to this day, over two thousand years later.

Hidden in the hills of Epidaurus about 100 miles from Athens, the 14000-seat theatre with the most advanced acoustic design has dazzled the audiences for 2500 years. Built to honour god Dionysus, this great theatre is a breakthrough in engineering. Its 55 rows of stone seats are built into the hillside with such precision that the theatre has perfect acoustics. Surprisingly, the reason for siting the theatre in this remote place has its origin in medicine. Next to the theatre there was a vast healing centre. For the ancient Greeks, music – and Greek theatre is a fundamental musical experience – was actually used in medical therapy.
