Ancient Nemea was not a city-state but a sacred sanctuary, much like Olympia, dedicated to Zeus. It served as the host of the biennial Nemean Games, one of the four great Panhellenic festivals. The centerpiece of the site is the majestic Temple of Nemean Zeus, notable for its slender columns that stand out against the rolling vineyards of the Peloponnese.
One of the most evocative features is the Stadium, where the original vaulted entrance tunnel (the krypte) still stands. Athletes would pass through this tunnel, often scratching their names into the walls, before competing in the sun-drenched arena. Legend also ties this land to the first labor of Heracles: the slaying of the Nemean Lion. Today, the site offers a serene, less-crowded glimpse into the athletic and religious fervor of the ancient world.
