A Journey Through Time in Tolo
TOLO IN THE BEGINNING
The area of Tolo has seen many changes over the centuries, but the earliest moment that we have proof this place was inhabited starts in the Mycenaean era 1600-1100 B.C. when Ancient Asini was a important Mycenaean port . Today you can visit the ruins of Ancient Asini , see the once great walls and the additions made to them later, during World War II, when the original rocks were used to create anti-aircaft bunkers.
TOLO LATER IN TIME
During history Tolo and it's bay lended themselves as a secure harbour to a number of different conquerors including Slavs, Franks, Venetians and Ottomans. During Byzantine times fortifications were built on Romvi island to shelter for raids. Morosini and his army started from here in 1686 and headed to Nafplio that was then occupied bu the Ottoman Turks and won taking Nafplio and the area under Venetian control. After changing hands for decades upon decades the area was liberated after the Greek Revolution in 1821 and 1834 refugees from Crete settled here. They made their own village and named it 'Minoa' after the mythical king of Crete, as an ode to their heritage.
IN MORE RECENT YEARS
Tolo remained a small fishing village for another century, a place where life moved slowly. Fishermen, shepperds and farmers lived hard lives here for a long time and it seems to be what shaped their idea of hospitality, people that didn't have much but shared. Combined with the raw beauty of the area it made Tolo what it is today, a small piece of heaven welcoming visitors from all over the world.
