Another significant fortress of Nafplio is Bourtzi, constructed in 1473 on Agios Theodoros island and situated at the harbor's entrance. It served as a crucial component of the city's additional fortifications for numerous centuries. The Franks named it Casteli, while the revolutionaries of 1821 referred to it as Sea-tower. A slim corridor existed between the fortress and Akronafplia that was secured with a chain to defend the port from enemy vessels. Following the capture of the city by the Turks, Bourtzi became a prison, where Kolokotronis was initially held before being moved to Palamidi. Subsequently, it served as a dwelling for the city's guards and executioners. In subsequent years, it became a hotel until the 1960s. This tiny beacon stronghold in the Argolic Gulf represents the city's historical legacy. Its name is derived from the Turkish word Burj, which translates to -fortress-. In 1865, King George I dissolved all military units stationed at the fortress, and it now serves as a tourist attraction accessible by boat from the port. Every summer, musical and cultural events featuring both Greek and international artists are held. Bourtzi is closed and not accessible during the winter months.
