1hrThe ancient Acropolis turned Medieval Castle
Rising sharply above the ancient city, Acrocorinth is one of the most impressive natural fortifications in Greece. This monolithic rock served as an acropolis for millennia, with its defenses continually expanded by Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottomans. The climb to the summit reveals a massive triple-circuit wall system that protected the city’s inhabitants during times of siege.
At the highest peak once stood the Temple of Aphrodite, though little remains today. However, the true draw of Acrocorinth is the panoramic view: on a clear day, you can see across the Gulf of Corinth all the way to Mount Parnassus. The site is also home to the Upper Peirene Spring, which, according to myth, was created by the hoof of the winged horse Pegasus. It is a rugged, atmospheric ascent through layers of military history.
